LOOKING AT THE FIELD: BYRON NELSON CLASSIC

There was no chance I was going to be able to catch up to the absurdly fast pace at which the Greek put there lines up this week. But, here’s a look at some initial thoughts on the field:

Lines from 5dimes:
Phil Mickelson +700: Definitely a bad price on Phil, but not atrocious. Still I won’t be anywhere near this one.

Ian Poulter +1600: I really don’t know where this one came from. He did tie for thrid a few years ago at the Byron Nelson, but I don’t see how he has the second best chance to win this tournament other than it is a gross over adjustment for the PLAYERS.

Anthony Kim +3000: Back away from the Anthony. Very tempting because poor play of late has definitely raised the price on AK, but after two wins last year he may have been overrated to start with.

Adam Scott +4000: This probably qualifies as a red flag. I doubt you could find a time when a player once ranked inside the top-5 of the world at one point and as defending champion is getting more than 40-1.

Hunter Mahan +4000: Mahan is on the margin here for me, because he will get no attention this week. He has posted solid results up until the PLAYERS. Obviously, one event isn’t going to scare me off, but Hunter was a Ryder Cup Hero is he really underrated?

Briny Baird +6600: Even a whisper is too much for Briny Baird.

Matthew Goggin +8000: Goggin’s solid play earlier in the season must have been forgotten if he is back up to 80-1. An always reliable option.

Nicholas Thompson +12500
: How’s Nicholas sound for a flyer out of left field to win this tournament. There is no way I end up on this, but he is a darkhorse’s darkhorse.

Scott Piercy +12500
:
scottypI can get behind someone who’s official PGA Tour picture looks like that. A few top-10s this season and a good showing at the PLAYERS for the Nationwide grad.

D.J. Trahan +15000: I may have to make a lot of google news searches like “Does DJ Trahan have swine flu” This looks like an oversight to me, considering D.J. just missed out on the Ryder Cup team last season. I can’t really say his 2nd round 67 last week means anything here other than that it might make me feel better about it.

David Berganio, Jr. +40000: I only have 34 rounds for him, but they are more like +10000 than +40000. Again, I have never seen him play, nor do I know what he looks like, but if he wins, I’m going to get really angry for writing about him here.
