Stricker needed to birdie one of the easy par-5s on the front

About 1/3 of McDowell’s wins came in a playoff.

This is old, but if you haven’t seen it I was wondering what you thought. And really, why is the PGA Tour data only available to MIT or other institutions like that? Are they any closer to making all this data available to Joe Schmohawks like us? It’s pretty evident that baseball statistical research has benefited greatly from peer reviews of research and people being held accountable because everyone can verify each other’s research.

  2. Definitely seems worthwhile as a stat. They call it sophisticated, but it’s really a pretty simple idea (I’ve had similar ones on this site before). Obviously, it takes the data and a good computer to come up with it, though.

As for the PGA Tour, I’m not sure why they don’t make their data available, though I’d guess it has to do with, golf is a pretty efficient talent evaluator based on performance unlike gm’s, so there isn’t as big a need to say who is better as there is in team sports; and the golf media is thoroughly retarded and more than happy to cite Tiger’s aura as the reason he always wins.

It’s a shame they are not more forthcoming, but as long as the only real needs to say which player is better is to settle bar room debates and gambling, there isn’t much demand for them to do it.
